 Shaping Your Message

Shaping Your Message creates relevance through connection and a specific process by which you monitor your desire to talk about what you want to say vs. what your audience wants to hear.

The Foundation

To shape your message you will begin with three foundational questions about your target audience.

  1. What is your desired outcome for your audience?

To agree to…. To commit to… To decide…

  2. Where are they now?

What do they care about, What do they know? How do they feel?

  3. Where do they need to be?

What do you want them to care about, What do you want them to know? How do you want them to feel?

The Frame

Once you know your audience, you’ll frame your content.

Beginning three questions:

  1. What are we talking about?

  2. Why should they care about this?

  3. What is the plan for this conversation?

Middle three points: Based on “What Do They Need To Know”

  1. Focus on what they need to know, not on what you like to say!

  2. Your logic may not be the same as their logic

  3. Create the emotional journey through compelling arguments and stories that appeal to them

Finish strong:

  1. Q & A when appropriate

  2. Final thought as capstone

    • Story | Anecdote | Example | Vision

  3. Plan the ask

    • What is your ask?

    • When will they be ready?

    • When will you be ready?

    • What’s your ask B? | ask C?

Harmonizing Your Expression
